Director of Music

to start January 2026

St Joseph’s Catholic Church, New Malden

This thriving suburban parish nestled in the heart of New Malden, seeks to appoint an experienced musician to take over from our outgoing Director of Music from January 2026. The successful candidate will be familiar with the Roman Catholic liturgy, and have a strong background experience in choral music, including Gregorian Chant and polyphonic music. The primary task is leading the parish Schola Cantorum at the weekly 11:30am Mass.

The St Joseph’s Schola is a volunteer choir of mixed abilities and ages, and the 11:30am Traditional Mass is said and sung in both English and Latin. The weekly Music list includes hymns, a sung Responsorial Psalm, Gregorian Chant Mass setting, and a polyphonic motet at Communion. St Joseph’s boasts a 3-manual Viscount Digital Organ, situated in the Choir Loft from where the choir sing and rehearse each week. Our Director of Music will show a lively interest in supporting the Parish pastoral team, facilitating Music within the wider parish and leading Music for the Christmas and Easter liturgies.

Hours: approx. 2 contact hours per week. Main contact time is on Sundays, 10:30am choral rehearsal for 11:30am Mass (finish by approx 12:30pm). Administration/planning etc. outside of this time (usually 2 hours per week.)

Salary: approx. £4,800 p/a commensurate with skills and experience.
Opportunities: further opportunities available to play at funerals/ weddings etc. as parish organist, depending on your availability and interests.
