Welcome to St Joseph’s
You are most welcome to our wonderful parish family of St Joseph in New Malden. Whether you have been with us for many years or are new to our parish community, we are happy and blessed to have you amongst us. Made up of people from many cultures, languages, and backgrounds; each bringing unique and precious gifts to our shared faith journey in Christ Jesus our Lord.
In our diversity, we find unity through Christ, who calls us to love, care, respect, forgive and support one another as brothers and sisters. Here at St Joseph, you will find a spiritual home where everyone is valued and embraced with open arms. Together, we celebrate our faith through prayer, worship, and service to one another, always striving to be beacons of light, hope and love in our local community. The safeguarding of children, vulnerable adults and all who come to worship or seek help at St Joseph is of paramount importance to us as a worshipping community.
“I pray that you may find at St Joseph, opportunities to grow in faith, find friendship, and experience the love of God in abundance. You are invited to be an active member of the parish and not a spectator or service user. Feel free to showcase your talents and help make Christ known in our world today. I wish you God’s choicest blessings.”

Our unique story from founding Mission to thriving Parish
St Joseph’s journey to becoming a vibrant parish is a fascinating story punctuated by the perseverance and faith of its congregation, the vision of its clergy and the continued dedication of serving Catholics in New Malden. Over a period stretching 120 years St Joseph’s has blossomed from a small mission in 1905 in a converted house (called ‘Inglenook) to a vibrant parish today of 1000 regular worshippers at the heart of its community.
Today our thriving vibrant Church bristles with extraordinary faith and humanity, and we are truly beacons of light in our local community and beyond. In fact it’s true to say that the spirit of from our founding origins in 1905 is very much alive in us today. One extraordinary fact is that we have only had five Priests in our 120 history - two of them Fr Eugene O’ Sullivan and Fr Hugh Hunt notched up an incredible 76 years between them.
It was the vision and determination of Fr Eugene that saw the Church as we know it today built in various stages through the 1920’s and 1930’s and with significant fundraising efforts of the Parishioners to finance it. Did you know that we only became dedicated as St Joseph’s in 1923? Prior to that we were dedicated to a little known Saint called St Egbert.
In 1949 we finally achieved our status as a fully independent Parish (from Kingston) and St Joseph’s thrived under the leadership of Fr Hugh who from 1949 to 1985 played a significant role in building a vibrant Parish community; one of the highlights being the shrine to Our Lady, installed in 1954 - the Marian garden (as we know it) overlooking Kingston Road.
More recently in 2006, a brand new Pastoral Centre was opened along with bookshop. This has served as a dynamic hub for the New Malden community, and as well as serving parishioners it caters for as a playgroup for Mothers with pre-school children and a thriving Scout Group – 2nd Malden, St Joseph’s Scout Group, which also includes Beavers and Cubs.
